Default Link Submit: Email spam? - 10-12-2008, 06:22 PM

So, I woke up this morning and found that the link submission software had taken a turn for the worst and created a spamming link.

Unfortunately, I had no clue this was happening until the mail had already been sent out, but it has been resolved.

My sincere apologies to those that were affected, as I know how ugly spam can get!

So what happened, realistically?
When you setup a forum on any of our networks (exept mybb right now, as I'm working on that), the software automatically queues you up for a submission in our link directories (mybbdir.com, phpbb3dir.com, phpbbdir.com, smfdir.com).

Rather than having all of these links look like they're coming from one user (myself), I create a user for each forum, when the forum is setup, through a php script. This helps with uniqueness, especially given the fact that most of the forums are not that well distinguished right now.

The problem with this is that a software update (in the link directory) added a field or two which caused individuals to be automatically notified (defaulting to yes) when new links were submitted. So, your email address was notified when a few new links were submitted this morning.

Now, I've fixed all that, I think, we'll just have to wait and see when new links are submitted, as to whether or not it's really solved.

Again, my apologies to anyone affected by this.
